Adventure sailing in front of the chalk cliffs of Rügen

After the strenuous construction of the special exhibition and the rigging of the DILMUN S, the first test sail was made on the Baltic Sea today. Fantastic weather, a good breeze and a panorama are the the chalk cliffs of Rügen that you won't find a second time in Germany. The aim of the campaign was to prepare a series of sailing events that will accompany the exhibition over the next few months.

The DILMUN S is a modern functional replica that imitates all the sailing characteristics of an ancient reed boat. We use it to train both newbies and experienced ABORA sailors in how to use the sword sailing technique. The movable side swords (“guaras”) make the raft greedy for the wind and reduce side drift when cruising. I had already discovered role models for this in 1992 in the Upper Egyptian wadis.

The trip yesterday only marks the start of a series of further trial sailing events in order to coordinate the ship and the area with one another. We have guests from abroad on board again this year (two Swiss) to live up to our motto “Sailing for Peace”.

The exhibition will finally open next week: From June 19, 2021 between 12 and 6 p.m. in the Molenfuss building, Sassnitz city harbor.
