Über Victor Clube und den 'Kohärenten Katastrophismus'

(red) Dr. Stace Victor Murray (S.V.M.) Clube (Abb. 1) (geb. 22. Oktober 1934 in London) ist ein britischer Astrophysiker, der zu den bekanntesten Repräsentanten des akademischen Neo- und Cenokatastrophismus gehört. Nach ihm wurde der Der Asteroid (6523) Clube benannt.

In seiner Jugend besuchte J.V.C. Clube das St John's College der Oxford University sowie das Christ Church College der selben Universität, an welcher er später als Dekan der Astrophysikalischen Fakultät fungierte. Außerdem arbeitete der passionierte Cricket-Spieler auch an den Observatorien von Edinburgh, Armagh und Kapstadt.

Weltweite Bekanntheit erlangte er als Experte für Kometen und Kosmologie zusammen mit dem Astronomen Bill Napier und anderen Forschern durch ihre gemeinsame Entwicklung und Popularisierung der Theorie des "Kohärenten Katastrophismus", zu der er als Ko-Autor mit Napier et al. auch mehrere populärwissenschaftliche Bücher verfasste (siehe unten), die das allgemeine Interesse an kosmischen Impakten auf der Erde in die Höhe schnellen ließen. Ihre Theorie besagt zusammenfassend, dass die Erde noch in rezenter Vergangenheit - zur Zeit des modernen Menschen - einem periodischen Bombardement durch Trümmerstücke eines großen Kometen ausgesetzt war. Diese Aufsehen erregende Theorie haben Clube und Napier auch mittels diverser Papiere in fachwissenschaftlichen Referenz-Journalen mit Peer-Review zur Diskussion gestellt (siehe unten).
