Two euphoric days at the ABORA Congress in Braunsbedra

After a two-year break, we held the 8th ABORA Congress together with the Nuoviso team for the first time in the new venue of Braunsbedra/Saxony-Anhalt. The two scientists Prof. David Rohl and Prof. Hans Giffhorn traveled from Europe as speakers. The third in the group was Dale Bell from California. We used this event together to discuss the plans for my new reed boat expedition ABORA V from different perspectives.

The first thing to do was to go out to the nearby Geiseltalsee to demonstrate to David Rohl (Egyptologist) and David Bell (Heyerdahl film producer) the effectiveness of my discovered leeboard sailing technique on the water. My goal was to show you the advances in ancient sailing 50 years after Heyerdahl. Both experts were extremely impressed by how manoeuvrable our raft DILMUN S was thanks to the simple boards at the bow and stern.

In the early evening we opened the actual congress with the first 160 guests from near and far. Robert Stein moderated the program and had to switch between German and English. At the end of the official part, I showed the guests the adventure film of our difficult North Atlantic crossing with ABORA III from 2007. The first evening ended with our guests having pleasant conversations with the speakers and the Nuviso team. Everyone said goodbye with the certainty that tomorrow a much more exciting day will continue the first day.

The congress day on Saturday was filled with excellent presentations. After my introductory lecture on ABORA V (probably from Morocco to Mexico), Prof. David Rohl gave his lecture on the origin of the Phoenicians and their journeys to the New World. The next speaker was Prof. Hans Giffhorn. He took us into the fascinating history of the Chachapoya ("The blond cloud people of the Incas") in Peru. The last lecture was presented by Oscar winner Dale Bell and Heyerdahl film producer. He describes how he met the famous explorer Thor Heyerdahl and how it affected his life.

All lectures were enthusiastically received by the audience, which was also reflected in the long and numerous discussions. Furthermore, all speakers held a panel discussion, in which there was also very good interaction between the various researchers. Another guest of honor was the culture officer of the Turkish Embassy, Yasar Özbek, who once again recalled the very good cooperation between ABORA IV and the Turkish Ministry of Culture in the 2019 expedition year.

Looking back today, I am very grateful that our first ABORA Nuoviso Congress worked so well. A huge thank you, of course, for the more than 200 guests who traveled to the Pfännerhall in Braunsbedra and followed our topics so enthusiastically. The pictures can only give a rough idea of the wonderful two days. A small film in the comments will provide more information.
