Sechs Jahre ABORA IV – Erinnerung an den Stapellauf in Bulgarien
(dg) Am 1. August 2025 jährt sich zum sechsten Mal der erfolgreiche Stapellauf der ABORA IV Expedition in Beloslav, Bulgarien. Unter der Leitung von Dr. Dominique Görlitz entstand dort in nur wenigen Wochen eines der ambitioniertesten Schilfbootprojekte unserer Zeit – mit viel Leidenschaft, Teamgeist und internationaler Unterstützung.
Ein besonderer Dank gilt den unermüdlichen bulgarischen Helfern, Handwerkern, Unterstützern vor Ort und natürlich dem ABORA-Team, das mit Fachwissen, Herz und Schweiß ein Symbol für experimentelle Archäologie und interkulturellen Dialog schuf.
Von Mai bis Mitte August werkelte das ABORA-Team an ihren vierten Expeditionsschiff. Es hatte zahlreiche Erweiterungen, aufbauend auf den Erfahrungen der ABORA III-Mission. Zudem war es zwei Meter länger und mit einer neuen unteren Seitenschwerthalterung ausgestattet.
ABORA IV steht bis heute für die Vision, alte Seeverbindungen neu zu denken – und für die Kraft gemeinsamer Projekte, die Brücken über Zeit und Raum schlagen. Sie legte insgesamt 1.550 km von Varna über den Bosporus, die Ägäis bis ins östliche Mittelmeer zurück. Heute steht die ABORA IV im UNECSO-Weltkulturerbe-Park Patara nahe Antalya ausgestellt.

In Beloslav arbeitete das internationale ABORA-Team mit Teilnehmern aus sechs Ländern, um aus den zuvor in Bolivien hergestellten Schilfrollen einen 14 m langen Schilfsegler herzustellen. Weder Zollschwierigkeiten noch schlechtes Wetter oder Materialengpässe konnten die Aborianer aufhalten. //
In Beloslav, the international ABORA team worked with participants from six countries to create a 14-meter-long reed sailboat from the reed rolls previously produced in Bolivia. Neither customs difficulties, bad weather, nor material shortages could stop the Aborians.
Am 1. August 2019 wurde die neue ABORA ihrem eigentlichen Element übergeben. Eine exzellente Möglichkeit bei den vielen Helfern und Förderern in Bulgarien zu bedanken. Sie alle aufzuzählen, würden den Rahmen sprengen. Aber neben Capt. Alek und dem GF Danko Kalchev ist vor allem auch Biserka Zafirova-Stoycheva für ihr unermüdliches Engagement zu danken. //
On August 1, 2019, the new ABORA was handed over to its true home. This was an excellent opportunity to thank the many helpers and supporters in Bulgaria. Listing them all would be beyond the scope of this article. But in addition to Capt. Alek and Managing Director Danko Kalchev, special thanks go to Biserka Zafirova-Stoycheva for her tireless commitment.
Dann der Moment der Wahrheit. Würde das 14 m lange Schilfboot schwimmen? Tausende Schaulustige und Presse aus nah und fern kamen, um das Spektakel am Varnasee mitzuerleben. Unsere beiden bolivianischen Bootsbauer Fermin und sein Sohn Juri Limachi haben ein weiteres Mal ganze Arbeit geleistet. //
Then came the moment of truth. Would the 14-meter-long reed boat float? Thousands of onlookers and press from near and far came to witness the spectacle on Lake Varna. Our two Bolivian boatbuilders, Fermin and his son Juri Limachi, once again did a great job.
Das neue Schilfboot schwimmt! Es hatte weder Schlagseite noch erheblichen Tiefgang. Nur die Dicke des Schilfrumpfes hatte etwas gelitten, da mehrere Wochen andauernde Regenfälle 25% den bolivianischen Totoraschilfs verfaulen ließen. //
The new reed boat floats! It had neither a list nor a significant draft. Only the thickness of the reed hull had suffered somewhat, as several weeks of continuous rain had caused 25% of the Bolivian totora reeds to rot.
Auf der Überfahrt von Varna nach Kaş konnte die ABORA IV unter Beweis stellen, dass frühe Seehändler der Varna-Kultur durchaus die maritimen Fähigkeiten besaßen, ihre Güter vom Schwarzen Meer bis ins Mittelmeer zu exportieren. ABORA IV erwies sich als absolut seetauglich und voll manövrierfähig. Dieses Bild stammt von der Fahrt von Ios nach Santorin bei Windstärke 6-7. //
During the crossing from Varna to Kaş, the ABORA IV demonstrated that early sea traders of the Varna culture certainly possessed the maritime skills to export their goods from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean. The ABORA IV proved to be absolutely seaworthy and fully maneuverable. This picture is from the voyage from Ios to Santorini in wind force 6-7.
Six Years of ABORA IV – Commemorating the Launch in Bulgaria
August 1, 2025, marks the sixth anniversary of the successful launch of the ABORA IV expedition in Beloslav, Bulgaria. Under the leadership of Dr. Dominique Görlitz, one of the most ambitious reed boat projects of our time was created there in just a few weeks – with great passion, team spirit, and international support.
Special thanks go to the tireless Bulgarian helpers, craftsmen, local supporters, and of course, the ABORA team, who, with expertise, heart, and sweat, created a symbol of experimental archaeology and intercultural dialogue. From May to mid-August, the ABORA team worked on their fourth expedition vessel. It featured numerous additions, building on the experiences of the ABORA III mission. It was also two meters longer and equipped with a new lower leeboard mount. To this day, ABORA IV represents the vision of rethinking old maritime connections – and the power of collaborative projects that build bridges across time and space. She covered a total of 1,550 km from Varna across the Bosphorus and the Aegean Sea to the eastern Mediterranean. Today, the ABORA IV is on display in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Patara Park near Antalya.
