Weiteres 2.000 Jahre altes amerikanisches Ananas-Fresko in Pompeji entdeckt?
This 2,000-year-old fresco was uncovered during excavations in the Regio IX area of the Pompeii Archaeological Park. I marked the two fruits with arrows. The question is, is it actually a New World pineapple or a similar fruit that is now extinct in the Old World and thus forgotten? //
Another archaeological find of a plant representation that bears a close resemblance to the pineapple. For comparison, I copied a photo of a pineapple fruit to show the morphological similarity. The picture shows that the recent excavation in Pompeii is not an isolated case. In late antiquity there were probably many such luxury products from long-distance trade. //
A Roman citizen holding in his left hand an object resembling a large pineapple fruit. //
An example of the possible trading activities of the Romans on the Atlantic - the Mayan city of Comalcalco near the Gulf of Mexico. The architecture of the city is Maja. The brick construction is Roman and unique in America. Accompanying finds support the hypothesis that there was temporary contact with this metropolis. //
Is the theory really so unscientific that the early peoples of the Old World had intermittent contact with the agricultural cultures of the New World? My ABORA expeditions, my doctorate on tobacco and cocaine in Egyptian mummies and the phytogeographical research of many colleagues prove categorically that there must have been sporadic trade contacts from the end of the Neolithic period onwards. There is no other way to explain the many foreign crops and their pests!
Another 2,000-year-old American pineapple fresco discovered in Pompeii?
An impressive still life fresco resembling a pizza was found in the ruins of ancient Pompeii. An ingredient on the antique pizza looks suspiciously like a pineapple! This is not the first suspicious pineapple find in the Roman city, which was destroyed literally overnight by a volcanic eruption around AD 79.
The fresco appears to represent a round focaccia loaf on a silver tray, serving as a support for various fruits, including a pomegranate and possibly a date, and what are believed to be two smaller pineapples. Experts say the bread is flavored with spices or moretum, a herb cheese spread eaten by the ancient Romans. Next to the bread is a goblet of wine, dried fruit, dates, pomegranates and a garland of yellow strawberry trees.
The Italian archaeologists are amazed at the realistic representation of this ancient pizza. However, they pay little attention to the two supposed pineapple fruits. Their reasoning: "The 'pineapple' on the plate is probably something else entirely, however, since the first European to encounter the fruit was Christopher Columbus in Guadeloupe in 1493" (The Guardian, June, 22th, 2023 ).
Other archaeologists have already discovered images of supposed pineapple fruits. Finds of this kind are always assigned to other similar-looking ancient world species, because what must not be cannot be: the ancient cultures were not in direct contact with the peoples of the New World. However, many finds of ancient American crops in ancient excavations speak against this paradigm, such as pineapple extract in Israel (2018), Mexican agave fibers in the ancient ship Kyrenia (1976) and sunflower leaves in a Roman wreck near Rome (2014). All of these finds are either ignored or not placed in the cultural-historical context with the attention they deserve!!!
I had published several posts about Roman finds in America in the last few weeks. They show two things: 1. They are witnesses to a pre-Columbian epoch of global trade. And second, that there must have been a "return signal" back to the New World as well. Cultivated plants and early seafaring are two sides of the same coin. For this reason, we are planning the ABORA V mission, which is intended to prove that such cultural contacts across the Atlantic existed even at the end of the Neolithic period (Chalcolithic). The journey is intended to drive to some of these historic places on both sides of the Atlantic in order to experimentally verify such finds as in Pompeii.
